5.1. Disciplinary Process
A violation of the policies and procedures of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois or of the local agency may result in disciplinary action, including demotion, transfer, leave without pay, or termination of employment. The Diocese of Springfield in Illinois encourages a system of progressive discipline depending on the type of prohibited conduct. However, the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois or its agencies are not required to engage in progressive discipline and may discipline or terminate an employee who violates the standards of conduct, where the quality or value of their work fails to meet expectations, or when an act is determined to warrant an immediate termination after investigation at any time. Again, any attempt at progressive discipline does not imply that employment is anything other than on an “at-will” basis consistent with applicable law. Note that the specific terms of the employment relationship, including termination procedures, are governed by the laws of the state in which the employee is employed.
