SUMMARY:Special event to commemorate 128th anniversary of Quincy’s Father Tolton’s death
DESCRIPTION:Quincy\, IL – Area Catholics and others devoted to the Venerable Servant of God Father Augustine Tolton – who grew up in Quincy\, ministered in Quincy\, and is buried in Quincy – will commemorate the 128th anniversary of his death with a pilgrimage procession on Wednesday\, July 9 in Quincy. Father Tolton is recognized as the first black priest in the United States and the Cause for his beatification and canonization of sainthood is underway in Rome.   \nThe mile-long pilgrimage procession will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the statue of Father Tolton outside St. Peter Catholic Church at 2600 Maine Street. After a few words of welcome and explanation\, followed by a prayer\, the pilgrimage procession will process along the south side of Maine Street where it will cross onto the east side of South 33rd Street. It will then process along the east side of South 33rd Street until it reaches St. Peter Catholic Cemetery where Father Tolton is buried. \nUpon entering the cemetery\, the procession will stop at the grave of Father Tolton for the celebration of Evening Prayer at 6:30 p.m. Father Daren Zehnle\, Director of Campus Ministry and adjunct professor at Quincy University\, will preside.  \nFollowing Evening Prayer\, the pilgrims will pray for an end to racism and for more priests through Father Tolton’s intercession\, as well as for Father Tolton’s canonization as a saint. The pilgrimage procession will conclude with the singing of “Holy God\, We Praise Thy Name\,” Father Tolton’s favorite hymn. \nThose who wish to participate in Evening Prayer but cannot walk in the procession are invited to park near the cemetery to meet the procession at the grave. Due to the small size of the cemetery\, no one should park in the cemetery itself. \nChairs and bottled water will be provided at the cemetery for those who wish to participate in Evening Prayer. \nFather Tolton was born into slavery in 1854. In 1862\, his mother and siblings made a daring escape across the Mississippi River to Illinois. After settling in Quincy\, he went to school at St. Peter’s Catholic School. Tolton later went to seminary in Rome because no American seminary would accept a black man. Thinking he would minister in Africa\, once he was ordained\, he was instead sent back to Quincy\, where he arrived to thousands of supporters. Known for his incredible singing and homilies\, Tolton spent several years in Quincy before transferring to Chicago. He died of heatstroke at the age of 43 on July 9\, 1897\, and is buried at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Quincy. Most recently\, Pope Francis declared him “Venerable” on June 12\, 2019\, the second step of four to becoming a saint in the Catholic Church. \nFor more information about this event\, please contact: \nFr. Daren J. Zehnle \n(217) 321-1109 \ndzehnle@dio.org

SUMMARY:Attend the Chrism Mass with members from every parish in our diocese at the Cathedral during Holy Week
DESCRIPTION:The holy oils at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.Photo by Debbie Benz \nThe Chrism Mass is one of the most beautiful liturgies of the year \nHave you ever wondered where your parish priest gets the Holy Oils he uses throughout the year? Think of baptism\, confirmation\, and anointing of the sick. They come from the Chrism Mass\, which takes place the Tuesday of Holy Week at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield. \nThe Holy Oils that the Church uses in the sacraments are all composed of olive oil. The process begins at our Cathedral. It first starts with several dozen gallons of pure olive oil\, and through a process perfected over many years\, and through the generous efforts of everyone willing to help (in recent years\, the Knights of Columbus Council at Cathedral has led the charge)\, a crew of people go about carefully filling more than 300 individual bottles using a conglomeration of funnels and old coffee urns\, labeling them as “Oil of Catechumens\,” “Oil of the Sick\,” and “Sacred Chrism.” The bottles are then placed in boxes\, which is labeled with the parish or institution to which it is destined to go. Before filling the bottles that will become Sacred Chrism\, the helpers mix in the balsam extract to the point where the scent is obvious but not overpowering. \nThere are also larger glass jugs of oil that are used during the Chrism Mass itself\, and it is these jugs that will be carried in procession up to Bishop Thomas John Paprocki for him to bless (Oil of Catechumens and Oil of the Sick) and consecrate (Sacred Chrism) at the proper points in the Mass. The boxes with their bottles are placed in front of the bishop before the Mass begins. \nAfter the Mass\, the larger glass bottles are kept in the Ambry at the Cathedral\, which is the place\, often looking much like a tabernacle\, that houses each of the oils in every parish\, and all the pre-boxed sets of bottles are distributed to their various destinations. They are collected by the pastor or a delegated member from that parish who attends the Chrism Mass. \nThe Chrism Mass is one of the most beautiful liturgies of the year in which mostly all of our priests are in attendance and members from each parish attend. You are invited as well! It takes place Tuesday\, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cathedral in Springfield.

SUMMARY:Join the Dominican Sisters in virtual prayer sessions each Wednesdays of Lent
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to join the Dominican Sisters of Springfield for Stay with Me: Lenten Prayer for Disciples. The virtual sessions\, scheduled for 7 p.m. on the Wednesdays of Lent\, start March 5. They will allow space for participants to attune their hearts and minds to the struggles of those Jesus most often accompanied during his life on earth: widows\, orphans\, and persons cast out. \nThe title draws on Jesus’ request in Matthew’s gospel that the disciples accompany him to Gethsemane while he prays\, just before his arrest. \nHosted by the Dominican Sisters’ Vocation Office\, participants can expect to \n\nhear reflections on the theme from Dominican sisters;\nenjoy periods of silence and sharing;\nbuild a community of prayer and mutual support for their Lenten practice.\n\nThe liturgical season of Lent includes six weeks before Holy Week. It is a time of prayer\, fasting\, and almsgiving in preparation for the celebration of the passion\, death\, and resurrection of Jesus. The baptized are encouraged to use this time to prepare for the renewal of their baptismal promises. Parish communities may also be accompanying those who intend to join the Church. For them\, Lent is considered a six-week retreat in preparation for their baptism or profession of faith. Customarily\, then\, these new Catholics are welcomed into the church during the services on Holy Saturday\, during the Triduum. \nStay with Me: Lenten Prayer for Disciples runs weekly March 5-April 9. Participants are welcome to join all six sessions or choose a few according to their own schedule and needs. Register once for participation in any or all of the sessions at springfieldop.org/events.
