SUMMARY:Catholic Children's Home announces 146th Year Open House Celebration.
DESCRIPTION:In September 1879\, a group of Precious Blood Sisters from Ruma\, Illinois\, opened an orphanage\, Pio Nono Orphan Asylum in Piopolis\, Illinois. In 1884 Bishop Peter J. Baltus of the Alton Diocese requested the sisters to relocate the orphanage to the City of Alton to serve more children in the Diocese. As the number of children increased under the care of the Sisters\, so did the need for a larger residence. Then Bishop James Ryan\, realizing the need for more accommodations for the growing number of children implemented the plans of establishing a larger home. The people of the Diocese responded generously to Bishop Ryan’s appeal and the new building was ready in the fall of 1923. That building located at 1400 State Street is the current location of the Catholic Children’s Home. \nSince Bishop Ryan’s appeal\, the types of services needed for the children entrusted in our care continue to change. With the changing needs\, the people of the community\, Diocese\, city\, county have continued to respond generously. \nIn honor of 146 years of service to needy children and many years of your continued support\, you are invited to the Catholic Children’s Home Pancake Breakfast and Open House. The Open House will be held Saturday\, September 27\, pancake breakfast from 8:00 a.m. 11:00 am and open house from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 1400 State Street\, Alton\, Illinois.Refreshments will be served during the Open House and you will have the opportunity to meet Children’s Home staff and take a tour that outlines programs and services offered. \nFor more information on the Catholic Children’s Home 146th Year Celebration\, please contact Michael Shelton-Montez or DeAnna Gleason at (618) 465-3594.

SUMMARY:Transcend Family Retreat in Springfield
DESCRIPTION:Bring your family to a weekend of spiritual renewal\, rest\, and connection July 25-27. This year\, the retreat is at Corpus Christi Priory in Springfield\, IL\, a sacred campus shared by two vibrant religious communities. The priory offers beautiful walking and hiking trails\, a serene grotto\, and outdoor Stations of the Cross-so while the retreat is more spiritually focused\, it still invites us to enjoy God’s creation in meaningful ways. \nRetreat highlights (July 25-27): \n\nNew location – A deeply spiritual environment\, more affordable\, and fully aligned with our retreat mission.\nNew dates – Late July\, due to the facility’s school-year calendar. In the fall\, they run a trade school in a Catholic environment (worth looking into and knowing about)\nStunning sacred space – The church invites reverence and prayer without needing to recreate a worship environment from scratch.\nComfortable rooms – Hotel-style accommodations (yes-real mattresses!).\nOn-site priests – Resident priests trained in spiritual direction will be available for confession and personal guidance.\nOutdoor experiences remain – Trails\, prayer spaces\, and team-led games will offer a healthy mix of nature and fun.\n\nTwo ways you can help this year: \n\nInvite a family who could use this kind of weekend-especially those spiritually hungry or weary.\nContact your pastor to see if your parish could share the retreat flyer or announcement. (We’re happy to send materials!)\n\nRegistration link: https://tinyurl.com/TranscendRetreat2025. We have pictures and video of the rooms to help you plan your stay\, and we secured permission to park RVs on the lot for those who might want to brave the camper in July running a generator (no hook ups). We would love to see your family again-and to welcome new ones into the grace and joy this retreat continues to offer.

SUMMARY:Dominican Sisters invite public to join Catholic Sisters nationwide in prayer for a more just and compassionate world
DESCRIPTION:July 23 is the date the sisters will participate. \nSpringfield\, Ill.- The Dominican Sisters of Springfield will participate in a national movement of prayer\, fasting\, and advocacy for a more just and compassionate world on Wednesday\, July 23. Everyone is welcome to join them. \nThe Dominicans are joining Catholic sisters from around the nation. Each congregation has selected a day to participate in this national effort. \n“By choosing a day to focus our desires for a more just and compassionate world\, we heighten our awareness and sense of solidarity\,” said Sister Marcelline Koch\, the justice promoter for the Springfield Dominican Sisters. “It’s similar to efforts like Earth Day or Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day\, when people are encouraged to take some action to fulfil the purpose of the day. Our purpose is the creation of a more just and compassionate world.” \nThe Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) initiated the project\, which began on the Feast of the Ascension\, May 29\, and continues through Sept 5\, the Friday after Labor Day. \nEveryone is welcome to participate. All participants may choose their own ways to pray\, fast\, and advocate. Here are some ideas to get started: \n\nPray in a way that resonates with your spirit: Rosary\, Mass\, intercessory prayer for elected leaders\, quiet contemplation\, walking meditation\, listening deeply to a favorite piece of music.\nFasting is commonly associated with limiting food intake\, but may also include fasting from social media or television\, from complaining or gossiping\, from focusing on the negative or worrying excessively.\nAdvocating for justice by calling or sending emails to elected officials is one of the best ways to make your wishes know to those who represent you in Congress. Closer to the July 23date the sisters will use social media share sample messages for officials\, or participants can craft their own.\n\nOther ways to make the day meaningful might be found in a downloadable PDF\, “82 small acts of resistance you can do today” prepared by the Cor Unum Community. \nParticipants in the Springfield area are welcome to join the Dominican Sisters for theweekly 4:30-5:00 pm vigil they’ve held near the entrance to their motherhouse at 1237 W. Monroe St. since June 4. They’ve circled their property with signs advocating the principals of Catholic Social Teaching\, which are “ways to lead our nation closer to what God desires for us and for our world\,” Sister Marcelline said. \nLCWR is an association of the leaders of congregations of Catholic women religious in the United States. The conference has nearly 1270 members\, who represent approximately 66 percent of the 35\,000 women religious in the United States. \nThe Dominican Sisters of Springfield are part of a worldwide Dominican family\, the Order of Preachers. For more than 800 years\, Dominicans have preached the Gospel in word and deed. The Springfield Dominicans were established in Jacksonville\, Illinois\, in 1873 and relocated to Springfield in 1893. Today\, thousands of Dominican sisters\, nuns\, priests\, brothers\, associates\, and laity minister in more than 100 countries around the world. SUMMARY:Special event to commemorate 128th anniversary of Quincy’s Father Tolton’s death
DESCRIPTION:Quincy\, IL – Area Catholics and others devoted to the Venerable Servant of God Father Augustine Tolton – who grew up in Quincy\, ministered in Quincy\, and is buried in Quincy – will commemorate the 128th anniversary of his death with a pilgrimage procession on Wednesday\, July 9 in Quincy. Father Tolton is recognized as the first black priest in the United States and the Cause for his beatification and canonization of sainthood is underway in Rome.   \nThe mile-long pilgrimage procession will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the statue of Father Tolton outside St. Peter Catholic Church at 2600 Maine Street. After a few words of welcome and explanation\, followed by a prayer\, the pilgrimage procession will process along the south side of Maine Street where it will cross onto the east side of South 33rd Street. It will then process along the east side of South 33rd Street until it reaches St. Peter Catholic Cemetery where Father Tolton is buried. \nUpon entering the cemetery\, the procession will stop at the grave of Father Tolton for the celebration of Evening Prayer at 6:30 p.m. Father Daren Zehnle\, Director of Campus Ministry and adjunct professor at Quincy University\, will preside.  \nFollowing Evening Prayer\, the pilgrims will pray for an end to racism and for more priests through Father Tolton’s intercession\, as well as for Father Tolton’s canonization as a saint. The pilgrimage procession will conclude with the singing of “Holy God\, We Praise Thy Name\,” Father Tolton’s favorite hymn. \nThose who wish to participate in Evening Prayer but cannot walk in the procession are invited to park near the cemetery to meet the procession at the grave. Due to the small size of the cemetery\, no one should park in the cemetery itself. \nChairs and bottled water will be provided at the cemetery for those who wish to participate in Evening Prayer. \nFather Tolton was born into slavery in 1854. In 1862\, his mother and siblings made a daring escape across the Mississippi River to Illinois. After settling in Quincy\, he went to school at St. Peter’s Catholic School. Tolton later went to seminary in Rome because no American seminary would accept a black man. Thinking he would minister in Africa\, once he was ordained\, he was instead sent back to Quincy\, where he arrived to thousands of supporters. Known for his incredible singing and homilies\, Tolton spent several years in Quincy before transferring to Chicago. He died of heatstroke at the age of 43 on July 9\, 1897\, and is buried at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Quincy. Most recently\, Pope Francis declared him “Venerable” on June 12\, 2019\, the second step of four to becoming a saint in the Catholic Church. \nFor more information about this event\, please contact: \nFr. Daren J. Zehnle \n(217) 321-1109 \ndzehnle@dio.org
