SUMMARY:From Southern Illinois to Ukraine: A Faith Response by HSHS
DESCRIPTION:A public presentation by Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach on Nov. 7\nO’Fallon\, Ill – Join us on Thursday\, Nov. 7\, 6-7:30 p.m.\, for “From Southern Illinois to Ukraine: A Faith Response by HSHS\,” to learn about how HSHS hospitals in the southern Illinois area are helping provide critical resources to health care facilities around the world\, including Ukraine. The event will be held at St. Clare Church\, located at 1411 Cross St.\, O’Fallon\, Ill. \nAmid war in Ukraine\, Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach – a global health affiliate of HSHS – has shipped five 40′ containers of requested medical supplies and equipment to Ukrainian hospitals. HSHS hospitals in southern Illinois\, including St. Elizabeth’s Hospital-O’Fallon\, St. Joseph’s Hospital-Breese\, St. Joseph’s Hospital-Highland and Holy Family Hospital-Greenville\, contributed to the effort to support Ukrainian hospitals in both rural and urban areas who are delivering health care to their communities\, even with an influx of internal refugees and both civilians and soldiers wounded by war. \n“From Southern Illinois to Ukraine: A Faith Response by HSHS” will be presented by Erica Smith\, Executive Director of Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach. In April 2024\, Smith joined Vatican representatives to travel to Ukraine and learn about the impact of donations. She will talk about her experiences meeting with Ukrainian physicians\, health care administrators\, and community leaders throughout the country and also describe how Mission Outreach continues to support recovery and rebuild efforts in Ukraine\, even as the war continues. \nIn addition\, attendees will learn more about Mission Outreach’s global impact and their advocacy for ethical responses to crises through responsible medical donations and other programs. \n“I’m excited to highlight the connection that our HSHS hospitals in southern Illinois have\, through various medical surplus recovery programs\, to the work Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach does in both the U.S. and other countries\,” said Chris Klay\, President and CEO\, HSH Southern Illinois Market. “Global health work is happening right here!” \nTo attend “From Southern Illinois to Ukraine: A Faith Response by HSHS\,” please RSVP to Teri.Mustain@hshs.org. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served at the event.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the Feast of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin\, the eighth saint in the U.S.\, in Indiana Oct. 3
DESCRIPTION:The Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods\, Indiana\, and Providence Associates\, invite people of all faith traditions to join them for the 11 a.m.\, Mass on Thursday\, Oct. 3\, in celebration of the Feast Day of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin. Mass will take place in the Church of the Immaculate Conception\, located 10 minutes northwest of downtown Terre Haute. The service is open to the public. \nA feast day in the Catholic tradition is a day set aside to commemorate the life of saintly individuals or a specific event. \nSaint Mother Theodore Guerin founded the Sisters of Providence in 1840. She was born Anne-Therese Guerin on Oct. 2\, 1798\, in the village of Etables in Brittany\, France. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 15\, 2006\, and her feast day was designated for Oct. 3. She is the first Indiana saint and the eighth Catholic saint in the United States. \nMother Theodore came to the United States from France in 1840 to establish a Congregation of women religious and to teach pioneer girls. After a journey of more than three months\, she and her five sister companions arrived at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods to a dense forest and primitive conditions. \nFrom those origins\, a vibrant Congregation and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College were given life and are sustained to this day through Mother Theodore’s foresight\, legacy and energy\, which continues to motivate the generations of Sisters of Providence who have followed in her footsteps. \nMany of the sisters’ ministries today focus on maintaining a vital presence in educational settings\, working for justice\, preserving the environment\, health care for the sick\, assisting those in need\, spiritual direction and a commitment to non-violence. \nPeople throughout the world continue to contact the Congregation for information about Saint Mother Theodore Guerin\, and to request the sisters pray for their personal intentions through her intercession. \nAll are welcome to visit the grounds or pray at Saint Mother Theodore’s Shrine. Pilgrimages\, retreats and tours may be arranged by contacting Providence Spirituality & Conference Center at 812-535-2925 or by emailing pvctr@spsmw.org.
