SUMMARY:St. Charbel's First Class Relic and relics of other saints coming to Springfield
DESCRIPTION:This October\, Catholics across Illinois are invited to a profound spiritual encounter as a First Class relic of St. Charbel Makhlouf is brought to the United States for the first time directly from Lebanon. The relic of this miraculous Maronite saint will be available for public veneration at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield on October 19 following the 10 a.m. Sunday Mass. \nSt. Charbel\, a Lebanese priest\, monk\, and hermit\, is known for his deep holiness and the extraordinary miracles associated with his life and intercession. Born in 1828\, he was drawn to silence\, solitude\, and prayer from a young age. After entering monastic life and becoming a priest\, he eventually lived as a hermit in the mountains of Lebanon\, dedicating himself entirely to the Eucharist and union with God. He died in 1898\, and since then\, over 33\,000 miracles have been officially recorded at his tomb and through his intercession. He was canonized in 1977 by Pope Paul VI\, who called him “an admirable flower of sanctity blooming on the stem of the ancient monastic traditions of the East.” \nVisitors will also have the chance to venerate additional First Class relics of other holy men and women\, including Blessed Anna Marie Taigi\, the blood of St. Padre Pio\, Fr. Peter Rookey’s Cross with a piece of the True Cross\, St. André Bessette\, the three Fatima children\, and St. Carlo Acutis. \nThis unique opportunity invites the faithful to bring their intentions\, their burdens\, and their hopes\, and to draw near to a powerful intercessor. Many who have sought St. Charbel’s prayers have experienced healing\, peace\, and even the miraculous.

SUMMARY:Catholic Children's Home announces 146th Year Open House Celebration.
DESCRIPTION:In September 1879\, a group of Precious Blood Sisters from Ruma\, Illinois\, opened an orphanage\, Pio Nono Orphan Asylum in Piopolis\, Illinois. In 1884 Bishop Peter J. Baltus of the Alton Diocese requested the sisters to relocate the orphanage to the City of Alton to serve more children in the Diocese. As the number of children increased under the care of the Sisters\, so did the need for a larger residence. Then Bishop James Ryan\, realizing the need for more accommodations for the growing number of children implemented the plans of establishing a larger home. The people of the Diocese responded generously to Bishop Ryan’s appeal and the new building was ready in the fall of 1923. That building located at 1400 State Street is the current location of the Catholic Children’s Home. \nSince Bishop Ryan’s appeal\, the types of services needed for the children entrusted in our care continue to change. With the changing needs\, the people of the community\, Diocese\, city\, county have continued to respond generously. \nIn honor of 146 years of service to needy children and many years of your continued support\, you are invited to the Catholic Children’s Home Pancake Breakfast and Open House. The Open House will be held Saturday\, September 27\, pancake breakfast from 8:00 a.m. 11:00 am and open house from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 1400 State Street\, Alton\, Illinois.Refreshments will be served during the Open House and you will have the opportunity to meet Children’s Home staff and take a tour that outlines programs and services offered. \nFor more information on the Catholic Children’s Home 146th Year Celebration\, please contact Michael Shelton-Montez or DeAnna Gleason at (618) 465-3594.
