The Rite of Reception and Installation: A Cause for Celebration

When a new bishop, already ordained and transferred from another place, comes to take possession of the diocese, he is solemnly received in the cathedral church by the clergy and the people of the local Church.

This rite is relatively simple. The bishop is met at the doors of the cathedral church, he sprinkles those assembled with holy water, takes the pastoral staff, sits in the bishop’s chair, and is greeted by members of the faithful. But the most important element of this rite is the Eucharistic celebration in the form of a stational Mass, that is, Mass in which bishop and clergy and people of the diocese all take a full, conscious, and active part.
